I'm incredibly grateful for KPMG for organising today's event. As Steven’s introduction showed, you demonstrate real social responsibility throughout your business, and I want to thank all those who have been involved in the research and in the thinking behind our policy document on equal pay. You have heard from Theresa [Theresa May MP, Conservative: Maidenhead) who has done so much work on this important issue. With all that has been happening in financial markets and on Britain's high streets over the last week, I hope you won't mind if I focus my remarks on the economic and financial situation more generally. But before I do that, let me say something about equal pay. In fact, let me say three things. First, this issue really matters and it really matters to me. Thirty years on from the Equal Pay Act, as Theresa has said, women still receive significantly less pay than men, 17.2 percent, to be precise, and for the part-time work the position is even worse. Let me deal with the issue as a whole. This isn't just a matter of economic statistics or corporate governance or even legal compliance. It is an issue of basic fairness and an issue about the sort of society we want to live in. I've said many times that I believe the family is the most important institution in our society, and I've said that all our policies need to pass one simple test "Does this help families do the vital work they do?" Equal pay is a vital part of that agenda, and is something we will pursue in office with vigour. Second, it's necessary to understand the complexities of the situation. It is not just a case of employers directly discriminating against women and paying them less for the same work, although that does still happen. The picture is much more complicated, and a proper approach to this issue needs to reflect that fact. That is what our document attempts to do today.
