Let me turn to the financial and economic picture .The lines of savers queuing to withdraw their deposits from Northern Rock serve to remind us just how fragile the stability of our economy can be. The credit crunch, previously restricted to the City, has burst onto our high streets. Let me be absolutely clear, we fully support what the Bank of England and the Financial Services Authority have done in respect of Northern Rock. The immediate priority must be to reassure people about the situation and about the safety of their deposits. In a period of financial turbulence, it is vital that we establish the facts and avoid speculation.
And there are a number of questions that need to be answered; we need to know more about the chain of events that led to the Bank's intervention. There are questions about regulation and transparency, being asked not least by the leaders of financial institutions themselves. If Parliament was sitting, the Chancellor would make a full and comprehensive statement both about what has happened and the government's approach to these important issues.
Clearly, it would be quite wrong for Parliament to be recalled, as that would only add to a sense of alarm. But I believe it is incumbent on the Chancellor to make such a statement and to set out the government's view on these matters and I hope that he will take the opportunity to do that this week. There can be no doubt about the importance of this issue and the significance for the UK.
Financial services accounted for one third of the UK's economic growth over the last 12 months, that is more than any other European economy, and the consequences of further financial instability would clearly have wider effects on the rest of the economy. We have already seen other high street banks putting up mortgage rates in response to the rises in rates at which banks lend to each other, and the sharp reduction in lending to businesses will put any recovery in investment by businesses at risk , so this crisis has put into sharp relief the risks to the economic stability that matters so much to every business and every family in the country.
