Banks should be more transparent with their customers too, explaining more clearly the costs of any borrowing. We should also consider preventing banks from raising credit limits without consent. Finally, I believe that we need to strengthen the sense of social responsibility that banks and other lenders have towards their customers. Believing in a liberal credit market on its own is not enough, banks have a responsibility to lend responsibly, and the Government has a responsibility to remind them of that duty when their lending gets out of hand.
The past week has shown us clearly that entrenching our economic stability means not just monetary and fiscal stability, but reducing the risks to the economy from financial instability. Reducing those risks will not be a quick or easy task , but if we are to build an economy that can both capture rising global prosperity and remain stable in turbulent times as well as calm times, then we must begin that task today.
So my message today is absolutely clear: we back the Bank of England's actions to support Northern Rock, the work of reassuring Northern Rock's customer is absolutely vital. The Chancellor should make a full statement this week about what has happened and the Government's approach to these issues. And after a decade of debt, we must entrench real stability and real security in our economy, so that British economy is less exposed to these shocks in the future. Thank you very much for listening.
