2006年6月,托尼·布莱尔在GMB(英国总工会)大会上的发言:布莱尔对工党政府所获成就的回顾与总结。
Now I just want to say a couple of things by way of introduction before getting into questions and answers. The very first speech I ever made in this hall, one of the most famous conference halls in the world, was in 1990.It was the first time I had addressed the Labour Party Conference and I had just become the Labour Party's Employment Spokesman.I remember starting my speech with a whole lot of things that we wanted to do as a Labour Government.I remember coming back off stage after I had finished my speech and someone saying to me, "Great speech, but we'll never get that done".In the GMB booklet, your most recent publication, there is a list of the ten commitments in 1996 which you wanted a Labour Government to fulfil.I know on many occasions there are things which may have disappointed people or which they disagree with, but of those ten commitments which you set out nine of them have been fulfilled. When I look back at the Conference speech that I made in 1990, actually each one of those things has been done.I think of the Minimum Wage, the first time ever we have had a statutory minimum wage in this country, I think of the right to union membership, the right to union recognition, I think of the restoration of trade union rights to public service workers at GCHQ and elsewhere, I think of the legislation in respect of training reps, I think of the legislation which has actually helped you recently in the case against ASDA, which I know you were discussing a moment or two ago, and I think of the commitments and delivery of equal rights for part-time workers.I am not saying that we still do not have a great deal to do, but when we look back over these nine years and we think of some of the things we have done, and all the length of time it took us to get them done in campaigning as trade unions and the Labour Party, I think we can see what a difference a Labour Government makes. (Applause SOT)
Your Union has campaigned on which was the paid holiday entitlement of 20 days, which we introduced - another commitment - as we signed up to the European Social Chapter.Well, as you know, there are some employers who force people to take the Bank Holidays as part of the paid entitlement. In the Work & Families Bill that we will be introducing in the next few weeks, we will correct that so that people cannot treat Bank Holidays as part of that 20 day entitlement.
